 Message from the Commissioner

It’s May; the summer is here and there a lot of summer bargains available in Broward County. The Super Summer Savings two-for-one promotional program gets under way this month. You can find some good discounts at local museums, restaurants and at various spas around town. Discounts are also available for the Water Taxi and at a number of locations offering chartered boats and water sports. To get a Super Savings Coupon please visit www.sunny.org/supersummer

Season passes are now available at the following Broward County parks: Paradise Cove, C.B. Smith Park; Tropical Splash, Central Broward Regional Park and Stadium; Splash Adventure, Quiet Waters Park; and Castaway Island, T.Y. Park. If you plan to visit your favorite water park more than eight times between now and the end of September, each visit after the eighth is free. The multi-purpose passes range from $40 to $76. More information can also be found at www.broward.org/parks.

A quick way to get around town is on a Broward B-Cycle. It’s only been three months since the countywide bike sharing program began and over 7600 trips have already been taken, 3.2 million calories burned and more than 77,000 pounds of carbon emissions offset. The initial 20 station system, which first launched in three cities has expanded to 26 stations and now includes a station near the Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale, a station at the County’s Hollywood North Beach Park, and stations in three additional stations in Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Broward County residents who used Prescription Drug Discount Cards sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo) saved more than $467,000 over the retail cost of prescription medications in 2011. The cards may be used by all County residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, and at any participating retail pharmacy. Cards can be picked up free of charge at most Broward County government facilities, including parks, libraries, transit facilities, the downtown Governmental Center and the County's four Family Success Centers. Cardholders also can save on pet prescriptions at participating retail pharmacies.

Commissioners voted to expand the Stop Pet Overpopulation Together (SPOT) Program, administered by Animal Care and Adoption. The change increases the number of pets that may be processed through the SPOT Program from a maximum of four pets per household, per lifetime to four pets per household, per year. In addition, a mother and her litter of puppies or kittens would count as only one pet toward the increased limit. The SPOT Program is a nationally recognized pet sterilization program designed to address the pet overpopulation crisis.

Don’t forget to honor your mother this month as we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 13. On May 28, honor a veteran as Memorial Day is observed.
