FLL's Observation Areas

There are three observation areas to view the planes taking off and landing: the Ron Gardner Aircraft Observation Area, Hibiscus Garage, and the Green Belt.

Ron Gardner Aircraft Observation Area
The Ron Gardner Aircraft Observation Area is located near the western end of the north runway. It is the perfect location to watch aircraft taking off and landing. It is named after long time Aviation Department employee and airport friend, Ron Gardner.

Listen to the Tower Conversations
In 2010, the Broward County Aviation Department installed a solar powered speaker system for people to enjoy the conversations of the pilots and the tower when aircraft land and take off. The radio transmissions lend an element of realism to the experience.

The Observation Area is a great place to spend a lunch hour or to introduce kids to the joy of flight. There is ample parking and the only airport observation area where you can sit in your car and view the airplanes.

Hours of Operation and Location
The Observation Area is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is located near the southwest corner of Perimeter Road on Southwest 39th Street (near the Animal Care and Regulation Division’s animal shelter).

Hibiscus Garage
This viewing area provides a birds-eye-view of the entire airfield and terminals. It is located on the top level of the Hibiscus Garage’s western edge near section 7A. There are numerous benches for sitting while you watch the planes take off and land. The garage is open 24/7 and the daily parking fees apply.

Green Belt
FLL combines noise mitigation with environmental stewardship in the Green Belt development which marks the airport's southern boundary. The 30-acre green belt is a landscaped earthen berm. It also serves the community by providing a passive park containing a viewing area, walking path, diverse vegetation, and wetland areas. This area is near the south runway but the public can also see operations from the north runway. It is the perfect place to have a picnic lunch on the grass under shade trees. There are also several benches near the walking path.

Hours of Operation and Location
The Green Belt is open sunrise to sunset. It is located at the intersection Griffin Road and Northwest 10th Street.

Hurricane Tips
  • Call your airline or check the airline's web site for the latest flight schedule. When the airport closes/reopens due to a hurricane, the airlines are the best source of information for their cancelled and rescheduled flights.
  • Do not use the parking garage to store your car during a hurricane.
  • Terminals are not designed as hurricane shelters. As a hurricane approaches, all passengers and airline personnel will evacuate the terminals and they will close. The terminals will reopen after the storm passes and declared safe to re-enter.
  • Within two miles of the airport, tune to 1670 AM for updated information about parking and traffic conditions at FLL.
  • The safety of travelers, airline employees, and FLL employees is our primary concern. The Broward County Aviation Department will do everything possible to maintain regular operations so the airlines may continue to fly.

Getting Results. Getting Recognition.

FLL is not only committed to the millions of travelers who visit the Gold Coast, the Airport also cares about the people who live here. That's why one of FLL's environmental projects is a beautiful, mile-plus green belt of trees and walking trails. This scenic oasis was designed to help reduce airport noise for residents living directly south of the Airport.

The Airport's serious commitment to the environment helped earn FLL the prestigious Jay Hollingsworth Speas award from the American Association of Airport Executives and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 1995, the Federal Aviation Association Southern Region Airports Division also awarded FLL the Air Carrier Airport Safety Award.
